After nine long years it is finally official. Prince WIlliam and Kate Middleton finally announced their engagement. According to Prince Charles " it took him long enough". The two 28-year-olds wedding will take place in the spring or summer of 2011 thirty years after Charles and Princess Diana's spectacularly ill-fated wedding.
The wedding will undoubtedly involve famous people. It involves a high profile, well loved Prince marrying a commoner (even if she's not that common by most standards) . The use of the term "commoner" oftentimes tends to connote the contemptuous way blue bloods view the bulk of humanity.
Kate's parents are not that common. They are millionaires and not subject to a yearly stipend as the queen and Bonnie Prince Charlie have become. In these tough economic times it is important to be able to put a financial tap on one's well to do inlaws. Afterall tiaras and polo ponies can be frightfully costly to maintain and upkeep.
The upcoming wedding also begins a new chapter in the daily ,ongoing soap opera happenings and occurrences common at the Royal Family's abode. It sells newspaper, creates the obvious media buzz and well there could even be tshirts and commemorative plates issued.
The engagement ring once belonged to Princess Diana. One can only hope that Diana's essence and spirit and determination hopefully emanating from the ring will serve as both a shield and a banner for Kate in the days ahead. She told reporters that becoming a "royal"was a daunting experience but then added that with WIlliams help she will "take it in her stride". Hopefully the young couple will support and protect one another in the days ahead.
We all wish the young couple good health, cheer and the best of luck in the days ahead. We can only hope that the long time performers in the castle soap opera have mellowed and will allow the young couple to enjoy their life and eventually learn the correct protocols of being a royal. Only time will tell.
